#Delirium is very common in people who are the end of life. Yet it is still underdiagnosed, and unfortunately this often means unnecessary distress for patients and their families. Guidance for professionals: mariecurie.org.uk/professionals/… #WDAD2025

Falls are a significant health risk for older adults, but a lesser-known factor—delirium—may make them even more dangerous. bgs.org.uk/the-hidden-lin… Charlotte Eost-Telling iDelirium #WDAD2025

Persistent #delirium can be defined as delirium lasting 5+ days. It's not uncommon for undiagnosed or mislabeled persistent delirium to lead to inappropriate care home admission - and for the patient to recover weeks later, when it can be too late.

Human kindness can significantly reduce the distress associated with #delirium. Eye contact, gentle words, reassurance, explanation of context - simple and quick to do, and very effective in improving the experience of the delirious patient. Build this into every interaction.

#Delirium occurs more than 1 in 3 of patients in the last days of life. Recognition matters—it allows us to address reversible causes while managing symptoms compassionately when reversal isn't possible.

10 principles of verbal de-escalation - from the American Association for Emergency Psychiatry. Many of these can be applied when a person with #delirium is distressed and "agitated".

We already know that feeding tubes don't help patietns with advanced dementia. This study shows higher mortality and readmission rates in patients who had feeding tubes. jamanetwork.com/journals/jaman…
