Our shade and shelter ewes will be lambing soon, which means another year of data on how climate impacts sheep repro from joining to lambing. Weather stations going up at UWA Farm Ridgefield so we can keep track of the microclimate in every lambing paddock!

Last week, we set up weather stations in lambing paddocks across our WA sites to measure temp, wind speed/direction and rain at lamb height! Shade & Shelter research project #edibleshelter #twinlambsurvival #lambing #shrubs

Today we kicked off 2024 joining for the heat stress project as part of Shade & Shelter research project. Animals were preg scanned (cheeky ram jumped the fence 🤦), weighed, condition scored and equipped with tech. We had a little helper fascinated by the ultrasound screen 🐕 Murdoch University Research

Assessing ram fertility ahead of joining at UWA Farm Ridgefield ! We measure everything from ram libido to sperm DNA integrity, to better understand how extreme climates could impact ram reproduction in the paddock

And they're on! Today marks the beginning of joining for another of our farms enrolled in the Heat stress project as part of Shade & Shelter research project. We headed early to Dandaragan to weight, condition score and put on tech necklaces on these Suffolk 🐑 before the heat 🥵.

The teams from The UWA Institute of Agriculture and Murdoch University Research spent the last 2 days preparing for joining at UWA Farm Ridgefield. 1250 ewes 🐑 and 30 rams 🐏 are now mingling 😏 in paddocks with different levels of shade. Now we wait ⌛! (and give time to our sore bodies to recoup 😅) Shade & Shelter research project

Joining at UWA Farm Ridgefield has well and truly commenced, with nearly 800 sheep kitted out with a number of sensors! Sheep wrangling soon to turn into data wrangling in the next few weeks, as we investigate how paddock microclimate is changing the way our livestock reproduce.

Lambing is in full swing for the Shrub Design and Management trial! Do ewes use shrubs during lambing and how? Do they favour a design? Does it impact lamb survival? One thing for sure they like playing hide and seek😅 Shade & Shelter research project The UWA Institute of Agriculture Murdoch University Research
