Some people don't like the word 'Islamophobic'. I'm trying to think of another word that describes 'attacking a mosque' or 'attacking people because they "look Muslim".'

Together with my independent colleagues, I have written to the Home Secretary requesting an urgent meeting in light of the far-right riots. We must call out this violence for what it is: rampant Islamophobia.

The riots over the last week have been fuelled by Islamophobia which has been increasingly mainstreamed over the last 14 years. I've asked the PM, Deputy PM & Home Secretary to meet with Muslim community representatives to discuss the safety of British Muslims further.

Our city is proud of its diversity and its many communities stand united against racism, violence and division. In Birmingham, there is no place for hate.

When you’re faced with an overwhelming amount of negative information it’s harder to be mentally resilient and hopeful. But try we must. Statements that we must uphold values and overcome with compassion are appreciated, and of course true. But we must have protections in place.
