Our latest work (by Mahmoud Alfadel and Shane McIntosh) is a study of build system downgrades—projects that migrate from a feature-rich, modern build tool like Bazel, to a more traditional build tool like Make.

To us, this phenomenon was fascinating—akin to trading in a 2024 Tesla Model S for a 1979 Ford Pinto—so we set out to better understand how often it happens and why.
