The passing of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg is a tremendous loss to our country. She was an extraordinary champion of justice and equal rights, and will be remembered as one of the great justices in modern American history.

It is disturbing that our charter culture has devolved to people arguing "rights" to this or that, even legal academics in some cases, without any discussion of the balancing that the Charter requires of rights claimed vs. larger societal needs.

A friendly reminder as many Canadians look to the United States in discussing abortion: Canada still does not have a federal abortion policy. There is continued unequal access to abortions in Canada, and we are not immune to threats to the reproductive rights of women.

The Preamble to the Emergencies Act states clearly that it is subject to the Charter of Rights. Contrary to what the NY Times has stated, civil liberties have not been suspended in Canada. Get a grip.
