Day 4 we are honored to have Dr. Yini Zhang Yini Zhang from UB Communication Department join us at #sicssndsu. She shared her fascinating research on information flow in the hybrid media system and discussed challenges and opportunities in using #css to understand the information ecology!

Glad to have shared some of my recent work and chatted with folks at SICSS-NDSU . So good to see #sicss keep thriving!

Day 5 on data visualization. zoltan majdik | @zoltanmajdik.bsky.social led the session and guided our participants to plot charts, maps, and networks with R! #dataviz is such a nice and efficient way to understand complex data and its underlying structure. #sicss2023 #sicssndsu #css #sicss

Dr. Khang Hoang introduced North Dakota State University ’s supercomputing facility to our participants. After his talk, we did an amazing tour at the Center for Computationally Assisted Science and Technology this afternoon at Research 2! #sicss #sicss2023 #sicssndsu #css #bison #ndsu

Busy day SICSS-NDSU: traditional machine learning, building a hate speech-detection classifier, metrics (AUC-ROC, F1, confusion matrix), neural network architectures, and for anyone still awake, building our own convolutional neural network for image classification. #NDSU

Dr. Dane Mataic Dane R. Mataic, Assistant Professor of Sociology & Community Development North Dakota State University discussed his projects on intergroup hostility and voter registration using computational social science methods, followed by an engaging Q&A session. #sicss2023 #sicssndsu #sicss #css #ndsu

A group of SICSS-NDSU participants finds the biggest possible screen to project RStudio to. Makes reading those lexical dispersion plots a little more tolerable.

Today SICSS-NDSU: why OpenAI isn't good enough for us, and why Hugging Face is candyland for computational social scientists. We'll cover forward prop, gradient descent, backdrop, inference pipelines, testing text classification models, and end by fine-tuning a BERT-based LLM.

Wonderful workshop SICSS-NDSU ! Great experience honing computational skills and making friends! Super thankful to Shuning Lu, PhD zoltan majdik | @zoltanmajdik.bsky.social!

What wonderful two weeks of deep dive into computational social science! Thank you Shuning Lu, PhD zoltan majdik | @zoltanmajdik.bsky.social for your instruction and organization! Great memory in Fargo SICSS-NDSU

Thanks to Shuning Lu, PhD zoltan majdik | @zoltanmajdik.bsky.social SICSS-NDSU! Really enjoyed the wonderful two weeks of learning computational social science, meeting talent people and exploring Fargo! #sicss #sicssndsu #sicss2023
