Happy to share our latest preprint on the timing and predictability of hybrid genome evolution in wood ants 🐜 We show that selection led to correlated local an(t)cestry landscapes in less than 50 generations in 3 hybrid populations biorxiv.org/content/10.110… (pic: L. Sundström) 1/3

Using genome-wide data we infer admixture histories and observe more sorting of genetic variation than expected under neutral coalescent sims. Sorting is enhanced in low recombination and gene-rich regions in a direction consistent with purging of deleterious load 2/3

We also found that haplotypes with signatures of positive selection in either species were more likely to fix in hybrids, suggesting recurrent sweeps. Thanks to the best coauthors Simon Martin, Beatriz Portinha, Vitor C Sousa & jonna kulmuni! 3/3

Two-year postdoc position available in my group in Edinburgh – apply by 14 March (elxw.fa.em3.oraclecloud.com/hcmUI/Candidat…). Looking for a researcher interested in microbiology and evolution/ecology to carry out experiments on antibiotic resistance evolution. Great city & friendly team!

A new theme issue explores the evolutionary puzzle of 'supergenes' and highlights factors that promote their origin, composition and maintenance. Thanks to editors Emma Berdan, @FlattLab, @GenevieveKozak, Drk and Ben Wielstra bit.ly/PTB1856

The final chapter of my PhD is out - rdcu.be/cTxB6 with @mel_rosina Simon Martin Joana Meier Nicola Nadeau Caroline Bacquet Frank Chan et al. The hardest, most exciting project I've been part of. Thanks to everyone that made it possible. Here is a summary 1/7

We're very excited about this paper led by Alex Mackintosh on the role of chromosome fissions and fusions in speciation. There's much theoretical and correlative work on this topic, but Alex's paper uses explicit tests for direct and indirect effects on the barrier to gene flow.

R users, watch out for this somewhat infuriating behaviour of the sample() function. R documentation says this is a feature, not a bug.
