Harvard researchers studied 120,000 people over 30 years. The longest-lived people shared one habit. And it wasn't "cold showers" or "5 am starts". Here's what it was (and the science behind it): 🧵

Calling bereaved men: will you help my colleagues to improve the support we offer to deathbed companions? Volunteer by email at [email protected] All bereaved voices welcome, but the researchers are especially short of responses from men. Please share.

A reminder Power of Attorney is arguably more important than a will, and more urgent. Just had a call on This Morning from an older lady asking about moving bills into her name from her husbands, who she's caring for as he has early stage dementia. Yet she hadn't yet done

I’m increasingly worried by this debate. As a geriatrician, please can I ask those proposing this bill to LISTEN to those of us who work with older people daily and think about how such an ‘offer’ would fit into the delicate discussions we undertake daily.

The ADVANCE trial found no advantage to tight glycaemic control in frail older adults, and a higher risk of serious hypoglycaemia #BGSconf

There is no longer any traffic on my X account. I have 39k followers but few responses to posts compared with conversations on other platforms. I'm maintaining watch here for the sake of followers receiving palliative care, but I'd love you all to find our community elsewhere: ⬇️

It's #ChooseGeriatrics week! All week, we'll be sharing blogs and videos from our members explaining why they #ChooseGeriatrics. It’s great to hear such inspiring stories, and hopefully, they will encourage more people to follow in their footsteps when choosing their specialty.

Guidelines for when to catheterise for retention? >300mlsPVR if symptomatic and >500mls of asymptomatic. I would have a bit more leeway in asymptomatic if e.g. severe dementia and frailty, not distressed, and catheterisation would cause distress jamanetwork.com/journals/jaman…

We already know that feeding tubes don't help patietns with advanced dementia. This study shows higher mortality and readmission rates in patients who had feeding tubes. jamanetwork.com/journals/jaman…

⭐️ New research on dementia in hospital inpatients. 🧠 87% of patients with #dementia had abnormal 4AT scores (≥1), vs only 29% without dementia. ➡️ The 4AT - already globally used for #delirium screening - could help identify undiagnosed dementia. Led by Rose Penfold

Incredibly valuable and fits with what we see in practice. An abnormal 4AT score is not normal. I see many patients with moderate or even severe dementia with 4AT scores 1-3
