Excited to be invited to give a talk on 'social-centered AI' at the UN Development Human Development Report Office later this month. See you soon NYC! 🗽

Thank you, Skyler Wang, for an inspiring talk on how a social-centered #AI framework could steer AI development toward more equitable and sustainable outcomes.

Had a great time speaking with researchers at the UN Development’s Human Development office last week in NYC about my work on ‘social-centered AI.’ We also discussed the possibilities and constraints of high-impact AI artifacts in ameliorating global developmental issues. Thanks for having me! 🇺🇳

My first-ever class at UC Berkeley Sociology was "Classical Theory" with Michael Burawoy. Today, I still regard him as one of the best teachers I've ever had. His ability to inspire and connect is second to none. You will be so missed; TY for everything you have given to Sociology. 🤍

🚨New pub in icsjournal🚨 Ever wondered why people use dating spreadsheets to help them with dating? I use this case study to develop the concept of 'data auxiliaries'—the things we create to offset data blind spots when using data-driven technologies. doi.org/10.1080/136911…

#OutNow in #iCS Why people use dating spreadsheets? This article by Skyler Wang demonstrates how these ‘data auxiliaries' allow individuals to track experiential and relational data points that dating apps do not take into account. doi.org/10.1080/136911…

Had an absolute blasting meeting people, giving a keynote, and organizing a panel at the Spring Summit on Open Problems for AI in Tokyo. Cannot wait to be back next year with Ruairidh Battleday and the rest of the ThAT (Thinking about Thinking) team. 🌸

My first PhD student Sarah Badr is now ABD! Her fascinating and timely work examines the institutionalization of psychedelic-assisted therapy. Catch her at this year’s ASA Sociology Sociology of Culture regular session or at Diverse Intelligences Summer Institute #DISI in Scotland this summer! @McGillU 🍄

New episode!! 🎙️📣 A conversation w/ Tessa Montague about cephalopod camouflage. Cuttlefish and other cephalopods can change their appearance with lightning speed. What's going on in their skin and brains that makes this possible? Link: disi.org/the-cuttlefi...

Took this photo on my last day at FAIR in May 2024, but I didn’t leave for long! Stoked to announce that I’ve returned to AI at Meta as a Research Scientist (in a part-time capacity) to work on some cool multilingual work. Looking forward to reconnecting with some old friends!✨
