Hard to overstate how much panic this dramatic FT headline has caused. It’s normal to conduct a review, nothing is decided, the AUKUS rationale remains strong. UK and AU will need to lift their game and prove value, but we were already preparing for that. ft.com/content/4a9355…

Really delighted with the outcome of the Spending Review: £2bn to support the AI Opportunities Action Plan, including £500m for SovereignAI. So much to do but this gives the UK a great foundation.

AUKUS is not a benevolent project. It provides concrete benefits to all partners. There's no need to be concerned about the Pentagon review at this stage. The UK and AU should just focus on delivery, especially for Pillar II, so the short-term value proposition is irrefutable.

The National Security Strategy is a strategy, hence focused more on achieving security than identifying threats. The SDR reviewed the landscape, and UK defence capability needs, but not how to fund them. The China Audit is an audit of UK capability and interests towards China.

Military parades can choose to tell a story of power through an eccentric (and occasionally camp) expression of historical prestige, or a chilling projection of the state's monopolisation of violence. Soft power can reinforce hard power, but hard power rarely commands soft power.

What's notable about this pledge to link the UK and Canadian AI Safety Institutes is the UK signed an MOU in 2024 to link with the US AI Safety Institute. A few weeks ago, America's was replaced with the "Pro-Innovation, Pro-Science U.S. Center for AI Standards and Innovation".

President Donald Trump endorses AUKUS, after another productive meeting with Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer. politico.eu/article/donald…

While not ideal, President Trump's departure does present a necessary reckoning for the allies. In his first term, the allies were largely unable to advance meaningful cooperation, beyond joint statements, without the US leading. It will be crucial to learn how to be productive.

A study I led with Joe Uscinski in 2018 found widespread conspiracy beliefs about immigration in the UK & US. While the beliefs were being amplified, their origins often lay in political misjudgement and elite obfuscation of legitimate grievances. Study: tinyurl.com/44wzx2b4

There's a reason there's a distinction between the 3% and 1.5% NATO targets. The latter is intended to focus on the "enabling infrastructure" that allows a nation to effectively participate in defence initiatives, as well as securing domestic resilience. telegraph.co.uk/news/2025/06/1…

The UK's Foreign Affairs Committee was able to request the Ambassador of Iran to give evidence today. Not many other nations could do that. It was a pretty extraordinary session, watch back here: committees.parliament.uk/event/24585/fo…

Necessary and welcome. The only way forward is for like-minded allies in the Euro-Atlantic and Indo-Pacific to work together and create a meaningful bloc of partners with the weight to influence on trade, security and strategic goals.

The way certain parts of the establishment have bought into China's propaganda of it being a stable and reliable 'grown-up' in the international system, while it disrupts and remoulds the global order against our interests, is genuinely surreal and utterly depressing.
