States resisting this stuff won't use the term "nullification" due to its right wing connotations, but that's basically where we're at.

Great review of the new James Burnham bio by Richard Reinsch. "Burnhamโ€™s noteworthy book Congress and the American Tradition (1959) held that American liberty would survive only insofar as Congress reasserted its rightful place in the constitutional firmament of power. That would

This great Danielle Allen article in The Atlantic combines some needed self-criticism, courage, and creativity in response to the current moment. "If universities have been a target, it is also true that the target was vulnerable. Survey data for years have shown rapidly

Can't wait for people to be able to read this book. Otis has done a great job telling a really important story that all scholars of religion, race, and slavery should read. Preorder it now! a.co/d/9lAsBso

Another great Baylor history dissertation defended! Congratulations to Dr. Allie Lopez (Allie R. Lopez), who passed her dissertation defense with flying colors this morning. Her dissertation on black dispossession and survival in rural Alabama during the civil rights movement

The fundamental issue is that a great deal of what happens in college is mechanical busy work that no one wants to do or seriously believes to teach anything. Rather than arguing the minutiae of AI policy, *that* is what we need to talk about.

There's a lot more I could say, but I'm thrilled and grateful to have received an NEH Public Scholar grant to write a new history of the nullification crisis. Let's hope the book is relevant, but not TOO relevant. neh.gov/news/neh-annouโ€ฆ

This was my fourth (or fifth?) time applying for various NEH grants, including the summer stipend, public scholar, and the regular fellowship. It's great to finally see my name on this list. Keep applying (and not just to the NEH, if it exists).

If you see any romance in the American system, the sight of a small wine import company with a Twitter account that hasn't posted anything in six years overturning one of the most consequential pieces of economic policy in modern history has to make your heart swell.

Yesterday, May 28, is the day Andrew Jackson signed the Indian Removal Act--a landmark in the legal history of cruelty, and a law that was bitterly opposed in Congress and the nation at the time. It should have its own day of remembrance. nativenewsonline.net/currents/this-โ€ฆ

One of the earliest academic historians of the nullification crisis lamented in 1896 that South Carolina "has been as backwards in preserving records as she has been forward in furnishing acts worth recording." Thankfully not really true, but a great line. (David Franklin

There should be more universities like St. John's. I do not mean their specific great books curriculum so much as their commitment to a completely distinct curriculum that bares no resemblance to the standard American university model.
