🧵Today marks the one-year anniversary since the contested presidential elections in #Venezuela on #28jul, which occurred in a context of intensified political repression by the government. --> What happened this last year? --> What actions should Norway take vis-à-vis Venezuela?

🇳🇴🇻🇪Norway, meanwhile, had been involved in conversations aimed at facilitating a political negotiation between the government and members of the opposition since 2019. This led to the Barbados accords that helped design a path towards the presidential elections in 2024.

The repression in 2024 began ahead of the elections, intensifying patterns of repression, which included: ➡️ arbitrary arrests ➡️ the use of torture ➡️ enforced disappearances, and/or ➡️ extrajudicial executions

International observers said the elections failed to meet democratic standards. Thousands took to the streets to protest, while the government cracked down, as well as going door-to-door arresting people. x.com/CarterCenter/s…

The statement appeared to mark a shift, as Norway appeared more willing to publicly engage on human rights issues in Venezuela after the negotations appeared to be over.
