Normally I would not be posting personal developments on this website, but in this case I have a pressing concern. My dad, Spanish economist Andreu Mas-Colell, is dealing with an incredibly difficult and unjust situation. 1/

Economists do care about inequality, and do support policies to reduce it. They don't believe markets are perfect, or even that markets should be used at all in some cases. A large fraction of our work is on these topics. Spread the word, and reduce some of these misperceptions!

It’s great that economists do research on market failures, inequality etc. But the public perception of our discipline is shaped by intro Econ classes. As long as those keep allocating 90+% time to efficiency and almost zero to distribution the perception is not going to change

“Significant other” just means that you can reject that they're a zero. If they’re truly important, you should refer to them as your “economically meaningful other.”

Is it possible to make an accessible thread about economic theory? Well, let's try. Let me try to explain to you why: * minimizing inequality is not the same as maximizing the income of the poorest, * why economic modeling forgot this for a long time, and * why it matters.
