This week the 5JCSC students received briefings on European Security issues, Hybrid War, International Relations, global security trends and dynamics focusing on Russia & China, as well as briefings from NCSC IE

Today the Defence and Strategic Studies block of the 5 JCSC concludes. This week student were briefed on Dissident Loyalism, Republicanism John Mooney, Radicalisation and Political Violence Orla Lynch, Russia @neilrobinsonUL and Gender and Security Studies Chris Whitecross.

This week the 5JCSC started their defence policy & capability management module with excellent strategic insights from DF Chief of Staff Rossa Mulcahy & the Finnish Ambassador Raili Lahnalampi. Next up,Irish National Maritime Irish Naval Service & National Aviation Aircorps Policy discussions

This week 5JCSC received excellent insights from DF Deputy Chief of Staff (Support) & Comdt McManus on the huge potential of the newly proposed joint Civ-Mil Capability Development Branch

This week the 5th Joint Command & Staff Course are learning about different Project Management skills & techniques from Joe Haughton #smurfitschool & how to effectively manage any size of project from beginning to end. A key skill requirement in the Defence Organisation.

Students of the 5th JCSC commenced their Regional Security Studies (RSS) module with a visit to NATO HQ in order to deepen their understanding of Irelands engagement with NATO’s Partnership for Peace (PfP) as well as briefings on current European Security challenges.

5th JCSC are continuing their European engagements in Brussels with the EU and the Irish Permanent Representative to Brussels. This session with Magnus Christiansson from the Swedish Defence University, examines security challenges faced by the Nordic/Baltic states.

The 5th JCSC visited the EU Parliament to deepen understanding of the political framework within which the Military instrument resides. Briefed on the Subcommittee on Security & Defence; responsible for EU Security & Defence policy, its institutions, capabilities and operations

Students of the 5th JCSC concluded their RSS module with an insightful Battlefield tour of Waterloo, a decisive battle in European history.

Students of the 5th JCSC mid war-game in their first Division level MDMP exercise. The Component Studies module deepens knowledge on the respective components functions, capabilities and effects in integrated combined and joint operations.

The 5th JCSC commenced their Operational Studies and Campaigning (OSC) module with lessons on Clausewitz, the Operational level of War and Conceptual Planning. Many thanks to Dr Jeremy Maxwell from the US Army Command & General Staff School for sharing his expertise & insights

The 6th JSCS commenced on 22 August. The course conducted a workshop on presentation skills delivered by FleishmanHillardIE . This allowed the students to develop their already well honed communication skills in preparation for presenting their research and learning during the course.
