"The science of math says that explicit instruction is the most effective way to teach." This is true if "explicit" means teachers are explicit about what STUDENTS know, and work with that knowledge. Much less true if we mean teachers being explicit about what TEACHERS know.

What a WONDERFUL day in Buncombe Schools - our largest (and slightly over capacity) elevating elementary MATH brought 206 4th-6th graders together for challenging and fun math competition series! My ❤️exploded that all of “my” ERWIN district were there! AND OWEN district too 🤎

When it comes to what we ask kids to do in class, we must remember this... "Tasks must be designed, not just assigned." We must design tasks producing evidence of learning. We must not just assign work for students to complete.

Just posting a Learning Target won't affect Learning just as putting a hammer on top of a pile of lumber won't build a house. Both are tools needing to be put to use. Learning Targets affect other influences totaling 11 years of potential growth.
