You learn something new every day. 'Dear Chatgpt - can you show me a diagram of the crew positions on a Bristol Blenheim bomber?' Must admit to being somewhat surprised how cramped it was for some of the crew.

An excellent interview, and great to see the interviewers allowing James make his points and arguments without the painful constant interrupting that other media hosts plague us with.

‘I Don’t Want to Die’. What was it like in the mid-upper turret of an RAF heavy bomber, watching aircraft shot down? 81 years ago tonight mid-upper gunner Ferd Slevar was watching. His recollection features in my book 'D-Day Bombers' - extract stevedarlow.com/2025/06/12/i-d… #dday81

FATHERS DAY Today is Father’s Day in the UK, thinking of all those young men who didn’t get the chance to become a dad, or who were lost with young children that they barely met. #FathersDay2025

Researching the book Sledgehammers for Tintacks I visited RAF Chicksands and got to view some V1 launch site reconnaissance imagery through a stereoscope. Incredible! The launch ramps and square building lifted off the photograph and became so clear.

Moving ceremony at Bomber Command memorial today. Superb work by RAF BBMF adding extra poignancy to the occasion. Great work by all RAF Benevolent Fund organising the annual service and readings of epitaphs from my recent book 'Epitaphs of Bomber Command' adding to essence of commemoration.

If you had to choose one high ranking commander and one airman from the Second World War air war to feature on new banknotes, who would you choose. bbc.co.uk/news/articles/… For me - Lord Dowding and Leonard Cheshire.

Interesting to see on the news today the plans to bring the Bayeux Tapestry to Britain. Hopefully it will spark a debate about the enduring influence of Norman Wisdom.

A moving way to commemorate the 85th anniversary of the start of the Battle of Britain. Working with the late Roger Cole on his book about John Magee proved one of my most rewarding publishing journeys. A beautiful book about a man with a beautiful mind.
