Just mentioned to a patient that it’s the ides of March and he replied ā€œCave idus martiisā€. We’re keeping it classical today. #orthotwitter #idesofmarch

From my niche surgical perspective I’d say the rate of increase in the number of consultant surgeons in the NHS has outstripped the growth in theatre or clinic space. This is the many chefs working on one stove alluded to here.

I encountered an interesting case in a young baseball player recently. I thought it may be worth sharing in hopes that others may learn from it. 🧵 (Information shared with permission from family)

ā€œAnd we doctors will not measure the diameter of tubes in mm but instead we will use gauge. For urinary catheters we will use French and the bore will increase in line with the number. But for cannulas we will use Birmingham and the bore will decrease as the number increases!ā€

What Lindsay Vonn is doing is amazing although it would worry me if I were her surgeon. I did once perform a TKA on a winter Olympian. Fortunately, that patient competed in the 70s and I didn’t have to worry about her returning to elite sport! bbc.com/sport/articles…

Four years ago, Mo’s life changed forever when an accident left him paralysed. Now, he’s the first paralysed surgeon in England. Watch how thanks to his own dedication, the adjustments made by his team and his hydraulic wheelchair, he’s back doing what he loves. šŸ’™

Visited Franz Josef glacier again after 20 years this time with the kids. It’s now retreating at 100m per year. Photos below (taken by me) show the diminution. The place I stood today to take the photo was where the glacier terminated in 1908. I doubt my grandchildren will see it

I appreciate that authors want the topic of their papers to sound important but can we please avoid hyperbole. The logical conclusion from this abstract is that up to 6% of orthopaedic surgery patients are dying from hyponatremia. Fortunately this is not the case.
