"Netanyahu’s son called him “Churchill of our time”... but change could end many different ways, for the region & for Israeli politics. Churchill won the war only to be rejected by voters. The same could happen to Netanyahu." My latest for Foreign Policy. foreignpolicy.com/2025/06/18/net…

Speaking directly to people inside Iran is nearly impossible right now, as the government clamps down on communications and spreads fear in communities. Nazanin Boniadi, actress and a human rights activist focused on Iran, joins amna for some perspective.

“The longer Israel’s campaign in Gaza has progressed, the clearer it is that two contradictory purposes are in play. One is security-pragmatic; the other ideological-messianic.” Read Assaf Orion on how Israel’s goals in Gaza have shifted since the start of the war:

Seems a few things drove the President: Israeli successes, Israeli pressure, and Iran's unwillingness to compromise after both.

Concern about whether it’s legal for POTUS to bomb without going to Congress seem quaint. Trump has invoked Alien Enemies Act to bypass due process, claimed authority to set unlimited tariffs, etc. Commander-in-chief powers seem like least of executive power concerns these days.

António Guterres This statement by UN SecGen António Guterres is truly disappointing and helps explain why so many see the UN as irrelevant or worse. Where is the backing for the NPT, for the IAEA, and for Iran to meet its obligations not to develop nuclear weapons?

Things to watch: 1) Iran's retaliation. Can they muster an effective response? 2) what are the Iranian people doing? 3) Will the Israelis pause?

if tonight's strikes bring an end to the Iranian threat, the Middle East will not be as urgent a concern. We just don't know yet., however. More importantly, the world is connected. The competition with China will take place in the Middle East as well as Asia.

If you’re protesting against a war and holding up a picture of the guy responsible for the repression, murder, and execution of Iranian children and people, you’re not an ally to Iranians and their fight for freedom. Imploring you all to research this man & not glorify him.

Big part of the Israeli campaign is to make it harder for Iran to produce ballistic missiles. Left unchecked, Iran would have one of the biggest inventories in the world within the next decade.
