Yellowmead stone circle lies on the western edge of a small plateau of land between Yellowmead Down and Ditsworthy Warren in Dartmoor. At the centre is a low cairn 4 metres in diameter and encircling it four rings of stones. It seems to have an avenue, too. #StandingStoneSunday

#StandingStoneSunday The mysterious double-holed stone in Tresco Abbey Gardens, Scilly. Brought here from Bryher, folklore says it was once used for the plighting of troths. Some believe it is a repurposed prehistoric standing stone!

Maeshowe Chambered Cairn on Orkney with its ditch and outer bank. A remarkable Neolithic monument, the tomb also contains over 33 Norse runic inscriptions, as well as various sketches and motifs. 📸 My own. #TombTuesday #Prehistory #Orkney

It may look like a big shed from the outside, but inside is the GREAT NEOLITHIC SHIP OF DEATH. Midhowe on Rousay, Orkney. Pretty mindblowing! #tombtuesday

My Ingush Word of the Week is: "khair" (кхера) - stone. A last-minute family trip to Avebury has been inspired by Stone Lands (Fiona Robertson) - an amazing book by Fiona Robertson. Can you see the face in the megalith, too?

The late Neolithic henge and circle of standing stones known as Bedd Arthur (‘Arthur’s Grave’) in the Preseli Hills, Pembrokeshire - located close to the source which provided Stonehenge with its bluestones. 📸 My own. #StandingStoneSunday #Prehistory #Pembrokeshire

Ringmoor Down: On the top of the open moor that is Ringmoor Down, to the north of the better-known Brisworthy and its stone circle #StandingStoneSunday, this tremendous cairn circle and associated stone row are to be found, although they were "restored" in 1909 by Rev.

The question from our Stone Lands book competition was "name a site in the Avebury complex". I am a fan of compiling Top 10 lists so couldn't resist working out the most popular sites named. The order may surprise you: Photos from our amazing evening walk last week with

#tombtuesday Lanyon Quoit, aka the Giant’s Table. Not as big as it was since falling down during a violent storm in 1815 in which a ship was wrecked in Mount’s Bay.
