Reporters on the ground with community connections provide the most meaningful and useful journalism. That's true on college campuses, and that's true in towns and cities across the country. Keep all eyes on student journalists and invest in local news.

A 🧵about the “outside agitator" trope, inspired by our book SOLIDARITY, which looks at why “outsiders” are so threatening & so vital. Outside support matters to movements. Not everyone denounced as an outside agitator is an outsider. But outside agitators are good, actually.

Historically, solidarity has been sabotaged through separation & segregation; by setting people apart from each other, dividing & conquering. A lack of regular social contact across difference inhibits solidarity: physi­cal separation abets psychological separation.

And bashing outsiders is, of course, a way to hinder internationalism—to stymie attempts to unify people and workers of all races and backgrounds across national lines.
