Primary 1 have been desperate to learn about dinosaurs this year. We have been looking at different species of dinosaurs and had a go at making some dinosaur models in the playroom 🦖🦕

We have also been learning about fossils and the role of a palaeontologist. We learned about how fossils are formed and the types of information scientists can get from fossils. We then took on the role of a palaeontologist to dig for and investigate fossils 🔬🥼🧬🦕🦖🔍

We have also been making painting some dinosaurs for our playroom display 🦖

Last week we had a go at making our own fossils. We followed a recipe to make salt dough, moulded it and then experimented with different dinosaur toys to make imprints and impressions in the dough. We can’t wait to see how they turn out when they have dried!

We have been learning about inventors from the past and looking at famous inventions. We then thought about what our own inventions would be and designed and shared them with our friends. We had some robot cleaners, speedy shoes and even a never ending packets of crisps!

This week we have been learning about Robert Burns. We had a go at making our very own tartan kilts and they turned out brilliant! 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

This brilliant boy was so excited to bring in a very special book about Robert Burns that his Grandpa had written. We loved looking at this book and reading some of Tam o’ Shanter, listening for rhyming words and exploring Scot’s dialect! 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

On Pancake Tuesday we had lots of fun, making, decorating and of course eating some delicious pancakes! 🥞🤤

We have been learning about famous inventors. We learned all about James Watt and how his invention helped people to travel quicker and further. We then experimented with some construction materials to design and build our own modes of transport 🚗🚂✈️🚀🚛

We used balance scales to help us learn about weight and mass. We worked in pairs to find things in the playroom that were heavier, lighter and the same weight as a glue stick ⚖️

Some fun activities to help us explore volume & capacity. We enjoyed filling the different sized containers and comparing them, talking about how much sand, water and rice was in each one. We also made predictions about how many cups & spoons we would need to fill our containers

We have been learning about famous inventors. We learned about Alexander Graham Bell and the invention of the telephone and how this changed and impacted the world. We then made our own string telephones to observe how sound travels and tested them in different environments 📞

To help us consolidate some of our sounds we drew pictures on freeze paper, practised our letter formation and wrote some cvc words. We then rotated groups to see what our peers had some up with and even added in some more ideas 💡

We have been learning about fractions. We enjoyed some active stations where we drew the other half to complete the pictures, made and halved some pizzas, found the other half using playing cards and worked out half of an amount using concentrate materials.

We went on a sense walk to the woods to explore our sense of sight. We took some pictures of things we found on our walk and then shared our favourite photographs with our friends 👀

We took part in a ‘smell investigation’ where we had to smell the mystery containers, draw pictures to guess what was in each one, and highlight if it was a smell we liked or disliked. We then revealed what was in each tub to see if any of our guesses were correct! 👃🥼🔬🧑🏼‍🔬👩🏻‍🔬

Last week we read the story of the Three Billy Goats Gruff. We were then challenged to work as part of a team to design and build a bridge. Our bridge had to: - Be strong enough to hold 3 Billy Goats - Cross the full breadth of the river - Have space underneath for a troll 🧌

Yesterday we went on a senses walk to explore the sense of hearing 👂🏻There were lots of different things we could hear in our local environment and what better way to end our walk than a quick stop off at the park! 🛝
