Awful. Awful way to die. The anxiety they must have had getting on to it in the first place. The noises the vessel inevitably made before it tore apart. The families not knowing what happened, and may never truly know. Those poor migrants. They only wanted a better life.

Meanwhile, the Tories assure us that snooping powers & opportunities created in the Online Safety Bill will only be ever be used to target Bad People, honest #OnlineSafetyBill theguardian.com/uk-news/2023/j…

After a tremendous effort from the #Saturn System #JWST team, we can now showcase the amazing MIRI spectroscopic views of Saturn's summer hemisphere: glowing polar vortices and contrasting temperature bands, superimposed onto a Hubble image from 2022 - enjoy! ESA Webb Telescope NASA Webb Telescope

Brown dwarf W1935 posed a mystery. Webb found that methane in this object’s atmosphere was emitting infrared light, despite no obvious energy source. Using clues from our solar system, scientists found a possible explanation in aurorae: go.nasa.gov/3HddFPe #AAS243

New paper drop!!! The following might be for you if you: study atmospheres of brown dwarfs or giant exoplanets OR listen to podcasts about unsolved mysteries Find out more about oxygen sequestration in substellar mass atmospheres if you dare! arxiv.org/abs/2401.11038

wow!! EIGHTY NINE new co-moving pairs containing an ultracool dwarf... not long ago the discovery of a single one of these systems would warrant its own paper.. and here Austin Rothermich has got 89!! Some of these will be rosetta stones for cool atmospheres arxiv.org/abs/2403.04592

Since he isn’t on Twitter, a new paper thread for Harshil Kothari! With a full JWST spectrum (0.9-12 um), he is able to wield retrievals to place strong constraints on the thermal profiles and molecular abundances of WISE J0359-54. Look at those uncertainties! (1/7)

9/ Finally, to the Eton educated patricians who started all this, with austerity and the Brexit referendum: well done chaps. You have destroyed Conservatism for a generation, plunged the economy into stagnation and made UK a prime target for Russian hybrid ops.

We have a telescope!🤩 Last week, summit staff successfully installed Rubin Observatory's combined primary/tertiary mirror. With all three mirrors & the commissioning camera in place, we officially—for the first time in 15 years of construction—have a complete telescope!🥳 🧵
