This reform is long overdue. However, shorter apprenticeships (below 12 months) should be a red flag for Jacqui Smith Bridget Phillipson We don’t want another BBC Panorama scandal; as we had in 2012, with 16 week shelf-stacking ‘apprenticeships’ conning people & the public purse

Looking forward to Value of lifelong learning debate in the Lords today. Hope the discussion is broader than the HE Loan entitlement- lifelong learning should be for everyone, all ages, stages and settings - we need a cultural change Jacqui Smith parliament.uk/business/news/…

My excitement is short lived. My concern was that the debate would be all about the LLE loan but it was wider. The Lords at their best. However it has surfaced that DFE has cut Adult Skills budget for 25/26 So here we are again. Jacqui Smith

FE Week I don’t agree with the decision, But curious—where will the surplus funding go? If apprenticeships drop from 12 to 8 months, that’s a 33% cost saving. Add removal of provider costs for English & maths, thats a big funding pot to redistribute to adults who need the qualifications.

"It is ironic that instead of a budget increase, there is a 6% slice to allocations to keep Department for Education spending within a budget that has not increased in cash terms since 2016" says David Hughes CBE, AoC Chief Executive. Read more: aoc.co.uk/news-campaigns…

DFE has already announced cutting the adult skills budget by 6% which means there will be a 100,000 less places, if they put back funding for 60,000 there is still a deficit of 40,000. Giving with one hand and taking with the other. Jacqui Smith #speakup4adulted
