Very excited to share our new essay "The rise of a new economic power" with my friend Suyash Rai in the quarterly magazine published by leading Spanish newspaper La Vanguardia. Link to the essay (first Spanish, then English): static1.squarespace.com/static/6558424…

India's rise as an economic power is unconventional - democratic from the start, services-led growth, and a very complex political economy. Can India adapt effectively to complete structural transformation over the next few decades? Rohit Lamba and I reflect on this question.

Domestic payments have advanced significantly, but cross-border payments remain costly and slow due to regulatory frictions. In this paper, Shehnaz Ahmed, Sanhita Chauriha, and I discuss the challenges, draw lessons from recent efforts, and suggest reforms shorturl.at/8nWhF

So Amit Varma and I did a thing. Mukulika Banerjee & Pragya Tiwari were kind enough to have us on their new podcast, "The India Briefing," to talk about ideas, India, and, well, podcasts open.spotify.com/episode/65vLw1…

A new report reveals that the Modi govt’s Jan Dhan Yojana success story is hollow. Investigation by Shreegireesh Jalihal had exposed how bank registration data was misused to rig the govt’s own poverty index. 1/2 reporters-collective.in/trc/modi-govts…

Grateful to Shreegireesh Jalihal and the reporters' collective for covering my paper in this report. By linking it to the multidimensional poverty index, they have added another dimension to the analysis. The paper can be found here: xkdr.org/paper/economic…

.Suyash Rai on India's 2025 Budget: "It is time to look beyond fiscal policy to address deeper problems in India’s political economy." theprint.in/opinion/tax-cu…

In ThePrintIndia, I argue that fiscal policy has long done the heavy lifting in the union government's economic strategy. I suggest it's time to look beyond it to address problems in the institutional environment and political economy: theprint.in/opinion/tax-cu…

The global edition of my new book, Making India Work: The Development of Welfare in Multi-Level Democracy published by Cambridge University Press and originally supported by The Leverhulme Trust is now out in the world. This is a book that I've been working on for the best part of the last decade

My new book with Chitrakshi, Tareekh Pe Justice: Reforms for India's District Courts, is going to be available from March 13th. Many thanks to Dinesh S. Thakur for bankrolling this project and to Elizabeth Kuruvilla at Simon & Schuster India ✨ for publishing us. Link: amzn.in/d/2QuABrx

QCOs are crippling exports, adding red tape, raising costs, and killing jobs. Instead of boosting manufacturing, they are reviving the license-permit Raj. Read our latest in Business Standard.
