Eye-opening. Genetics&genomics papers often use the kitchen-sink approach of controlling for every imaginable confounder. This paper shows the pitfalls of that strategy. Exec summary: if the “confounder” is causally downstream of the independent variable, you’re in trouble.

Our latest! Phages no longer own transduction! Staph pathogenicity islands engage in lateral transduction and can also piggyback LT to drive genome hypermobility. Amazing work by Melissa Ester Serrano @rbacigalupe José R Penadés Ross Fitzgerald and others! authors.elsevier.com/a/1hW-hL7PXmd9j

S. agalactiae MLST database contained a spurious allele from a paralog to one of the typing genes. This has been corrected, but watch out for this in other databases (or getting introduced into other databases)! Swaine Chen
