It’s #ShoesdayTuesday and this week’s top pick from our new #Shoephoria exhibition is a selection of silk satin slippers with ribbon ties from the 1820s-1840s. By the 19th century, ‘slippers’ was the term used for shoes worn indoors, whether formally - for dances - or at home 🩰

Painted in Paris in 1883, 'The Breakfast Table,' exemplifies John Singer Sargent’s regard for the formal innovations of the French impressionists - it also evokes the paintings of Degas and Manet. The sitter peeling an orange whilst reading a book, is Sargent's sister Violet.

Just a reminder that most bloggers review books for free alongside a trillion other commitments in busy lives. Please don't take that for granted. If a review isn't quick enough, good enough or you don't agree with it, keep in mind we are doing this solely for love of books.

George-Daniel de Monfreid experimented with many artistic styles but consolidated his ideas around Impressionism. A close friend of Paul Gauguin, he was his only link to Europe during his Tahitian and the Marquesas years. This still-life is from around 1905

I'm doing an online fundraiser for The Folklore Centre, Todmorden next week, Wed 2 July. I'll look at the folklore of burn marks in ancient buildings inc experimental archaeology that shows these marks were done deliberately... potentially as protection from evil.
