Are the imaginary numbers real? A free extended excerpt from Lectures on the Philosophy of Mathematics on the nature of the complex numbers & exploring how non-rigid structures generally arise in mathematics from rigid ones. infinitelymore.xyz/p/are-the-imag… #InfinitelyMore #PhilMaths

Congratulations to Sarah Vollert for best ECR Poster and Alex Browning for best ECR talk at #bioinference2024 (and Raiha Browning for great MCing) 🇦🇺 all well deserved!

In this Physical Review Fluids paper we study the linear stability of a viscous liquid layer draining around a horizontal cylinder. When surface tension dominates, pearls form around the cylinder, whereas when gravity dominates, hanging droplets form. doi.org/10.1103/PhysRe…

Oxford Mathematician and Fellow of St John's College Philip Maini has been awarded the Sylvester Medal by the The Royal Society for his contributions to mathematical biology. Pretty good teacher too. maths.ox.ac.uk/node/68841 Photo: Robert Taylor/St John's

Congratulations to Professor Philip Maini FRS, awarded the Sylvester Medal for his contributions to mathematical biology, especially the interdisciplinary modelling of biomedical phenomena and systems. Maini was the recipient of the 2023 IMA Gold Medal. royalsociety.org/medals-and-pri…

The professor and the pendulums. We know what will happen when one pendulum swings. But two? 'Oxford Mathematicians and their Toys', episode three, starring Jon Chapman (and the pendulums).

Congratulations to Dr Leah South - just awarded a Paul Bourke Award for Early Career Research from Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia. The award recognises her leading contribution to computational statistics research. Leah is a Lecturer in the School of Mathematical Sciences at QUT.
