One of the subtle beautiful perks of being a researcher at Joint BioEnergy Institute (JBEI): the diversity of living organisms we engineer. Even though I tinker microbes, I love peeking at what is growing in the plant incubator. And a flower just blossomed!

In admiration of our team's hardwork. Contributing in such a tour-de-force landmark feels really special. QS-21 pushes the boundaries of what is possible engineering biology. Thanks to my PhD advisor Jay Keasling and Yuzhong Liu for leading this impressive work!

It is Keasling Lab π³οΈβππ³οΈββ§οΈ tradition to go White Water Rafting in the Summer. There is a legend that the members who fall in the rapids become professors... We got 3 epic falls this season! π Thanks Jay for this awesome experience. We love splashing you!! ππ

We're excited to share the work led by Dr. Peter Winegar on the complete biosynthesis of verazine. This accomplishment marks the #1st heterologous steroidal alkaloid produced in engineered yeast, unlocking future drug development. Congrats, Peter!! π§¬π sciencedirect.com/science/articlβ¦

Personal news I'm so proud! π Got awarded independent funding from UC Berkeley @BioEnginuityHub & am building my own robotics + AI research Keasling Lab π³οΈβππ³οΈββ§οΈ. AND 2 incredible students are pursuing their thesis with me!! Sara comes from π©π° DTU & Marina from πͺπΈ Univerdad de Madri. β€οΈ

Dream BIG today folks. Imagine a timeline where Cook never reaches Hawaiβi, CortΓ©s never arrives at Tenochtitlan, and the NiΓ±a, Pinta, and Santa MarΓa are still trees in the earth. Where would Indigenous peoples be today? Happy #IndigenousPeoplesDay β€οΈnationalgeographic.com/culture/articlβ¦

π𧬠Happy Holidays from the Keasling Lab π³οΈβππ³οΈββ§οΈ! 2024 was a year full of scientific breakthroughs and collaborations. May biology continue to solve global problems in 2025 π§¬π

We're thrilled the work led by our Ph.D. candidate Maria Astolfi (Maria Astolfi) is out now on Nature Communications! Our lab has been historically committed to social responsibility. Here, we propose partnerships with Indigenous Peoples for an ethical bioeconomy. nature.com/articles/s4146β¦
