When I started my lab it was all in silico. Then all in silico but we also grow a few plants and do the occasional RNA-seq. Then all in silico but we have big field experiments. Now all in silico but we (CHIDANAND ULLAGADDi) transform 2000+ embryos a week.

Getting rid of tenure protections may be more effective at getting high performing faculty to leave for jobs elsewhere than it is at getting rid of underperformers.

Less than 1 in 20 humans on this planet is born with American citizenship, but for longer than I’ve been alive some of the smartest and most motivated people from countries around the globe chose to study here, work here, and become Americans.

I’ve had at least three topic areas: genome evolution, phenomics, and whatever I do now. Takes time to build a network, connections and reputation on a new area so people are reading your work. If they don’t read it, also won’t cite it.

Did anyone else get a "we've been asked to pause issuance of grant funding during the transition of government" e-mail from USDA-NIFA this morning?

One of my favorite things about this job when a student I've been mentoring starts convincing me that I'm wrong. Second best is when I make a suggestion and they can reply "I guessed you were going say that so I already tried that approach."

I am not sure I’m ready for being able to impulse buy lychee as a regular grocery store in the middle of the American Midwest.

James Schnable So many great helpers and sooooo much corn … and so many beeps of barcode scanners 😂 I feel bad about not getting group photos of each semesters team of undergrads. In fairness they came and went throughout the day for shifts, so not easy to get group pic

For the first time as a prof, I’m mentoring students aiming for faculty jobs in India. I understand which factors matter the most for US and Chinese faculty hiring—but can anyone help me figure out what we should be emphasizing to be competitive at Indian universities?

Just answered an e-mail that's been pinned as a "to respond to" at the top of my inbox for the past six months. And it feels great.
