Afghanistan is the ONLY country in the world where millions of girls are BANNED from going to school or university. This artwork had been sent to me by a young woman, who used to be an Art teacher at a secondary school. Today, she is locked up at home — alone and heartbroken.

Where did the dollar sign come from? And why is it called the dollar, anyway? It's a mystery which involves Holy Roman Emperor Charles V, the Twelve Labours of Hercules, some rushed accounting, and a silver mine in Bohemia...

Many people seem to be worried to observe some maps depicting the southern part of Africa on flames 🔥🔥 Such worry arises from a deficient understanding of savannas in particular, or Open Ecosystems in general, and it's worth a thread of tweets about it. 🧵 (1/9)

Dung: a never-empty fridge for resident & migrant birds. Its landscape-wide loss is a major source for decline of biodiversity. I wished we put only 1/2 of energy spent on pesticide ban on re-installation of pastures. We would get back lots of species. journal.afonet.org/vol94/iss4/art…

Would an ecologist from outer space be able to tell a native from an introduced animal based on their effects on plant communities? Our new study in Science Magazine suggests no! Thanks to Erick Lundgren and Jens Svenning for leading this important work!
