Episode 1 of Imperfect Paradise: Strippers Union is in your podcast feeds today! This series is the first time Iโ€™m out here on the podcast mic & I feel lucky to do it for a story about, as we say in this episode: sex work as work, and the work of improving your workplace.

reminder that layoffs are hardly ever the fault of the workers, it's a result of managing books/resources. workers are the labor that keep companies (private or public) financially solvent.

You have to check out my colleague Samanta Helou Hernandez work. If you have a minute today, please check out her latest photo story about L.A.'s annual blessing of the animals. These portraits gave me goosebumps. Just absolutely beautiful. Now I want a pet! laist.com/news/los-angelโ€ฆ

We stand in solidarity with our colleagues at student newspapers doing vital reporting in challenging circumstances this week. We are especially alarmed by the attack on student journalists with the Daily Bruin. Journalists must be able to work without fear of violence.

The news is out to members: LAist will be offering buyouts to staff. It may not be enough to prevent layoffs. There will be plenty of work happening over the next few weeks with our union, but I ask that if you love LAist, consider donating: support.laist.com

We are heartbroken by this and stand in solidarity with our colleagues We Make LAist (formerly KPCC). This follows layoffs at public media shops across the U.S. and comes less than a year after LAist eliminated 21 roles in a "restructuring." Please support their work however you can.

a lot to process for those in the unit and outlet at-large. local journalism is definitely struggling ... which is why we're thankful to all of you showing support by spreading the word and donating. laist.com/donate

I did not learn Asian American history until I entered college, through extracurriculars and alternative spaces. Like many others, I'm eagerly anticipating the series INHERITING by Emily Kwong LAist @npr for personal stories about AAPI histories ๐Ÿ”ฅ npr.org/about-npr/1250โ€ฆ

I am moved beyond words by all the support for Inheriting. Below is a personal essay about what's driving me: the family history, emotional instincts, and frustrations with mainstream journalism. May this show find those that need it #InheritingPodcast laist.com/news/essays/hoโ€ฆ

LAist announced layoffs this week & began notifying employees who will be let go today. We arenโ€™t sure yet how many union members will be affected. But we are already losing 11 unit members and 10 more members of our staff to voluntary buy-outs. Weโ€™ll have more to say soon.

LAist has a new CEO โ€” an Angeleno from East L.A.: Univision's Alejandra Santamaria. She comes on the heels of our layoffs and starts the day after most buyout-takers leave. Change is frustrating, but I hope the clean slate sets us up for success. laist.com/news/laist-namโ€ฆ

I was one of the staff affected by the layoffs. It's demoralizing seeing the acclaim and impact of the shows I had helped produce and realize that it can't protect me from the realities of an unstable industry.
