reminder that layoffs are hardly ever the fault of the workers, it's a result of managing books/resources. workers are the labor that keep companies (private or public) financially solvent.

We stand in solidarity with our colleagues at student newspapers doing vital reporting in challenging circumstances this week. We are especially alarmed by the attack on student journalists with the Daily Bruin. Journalists must be able to work without fear of violence.

The news is out to members: LAist will be offering buyouts to staff. It may not be enough to prevent layoffs. There will be plenty of work happening over the next few weeks with our union, but I ask that if you love LAist, consider donating: support.laist.com

LAist announced layoffs this week & began notifying employees who will be let go today. We aren’t sure yet how many union members will be affected. But we are already losing 11 unit members and 10 more members of our staff to voluntary buy-outs. We’ll have more to say soon.

LAist has a new CEO — an Angeleno from East L.A.: Univision's Alejandra Santamaria. She comes on the heels of our layoffs and starts the day after most buyout-takers leave. Change is frustrating, but I hope the clean slate sets us up for success. laist.com/news/laist-nam…

I was one of the staff affected by the layoffs. It's demoralizing seeing the acclaim and impact of the shows I had helped produce and realize that it can't protect me from the realities of an unstable industry.
