Great work led by Talia Emmanuel on what nurses consider when choosing their shift patterns. You might say "well, it varies", and that's correct, but there's more. For example, nurses want consistent and predictable shift patterns and flexibility over working time. 1/

We asked nurses what characteristics they associated with different shift patterns. Long shifts were associated with reduced travel costs & the opportunity to do overtime, so may be preferred due to financial need NIHR Applied Research Collaboration Wessex CLOSED Talia Emmanuel South Coast DTP onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/jo…

Talia Emmanuel Really enjoyed her presentation on the factors influencing nurses' choices in shift patterns. 900 survey analyzed from the UK & Ireland, the study sheds light on trends and themes, guiding further phases of the doctoral project. #SCDTPCon2024 southcoastdtp.ac.uk/fyc-2024/abstr…

There is overwhelming evidence that long shifts are bad for nurses and patients. The workforce are now saying no to unsafe shift patterns. We do all the research, but without you folks advocating for change bottom up, our work won't be as impactful. nursingtimes.net/news/workforce…

Our latest paper looking at hospital nursing team composition and patient risk of death is finally out. Led by Peter Griffiths we found that low RN staffing = higher hazard of death. High use of temporary staff also increases hazard of death. jamanetwork.com/journals/jaman…

Celebration time! Soon-to-be Dr Talia Emmanuel Talia Emmanuel successfully defended her PhD thesis yesterday with minor amendments. Her work focused on optimizing nurse shift patterns using data science. Examiners were impressed by how much she had accomplished in such a short time.
