Children are unique as individuals, but not as learners. Everyone learns the same WAY, just at varied speeds. Confusion about this has led to a lot of bad ideas and practices.

Teachers have been sold a story about math that goes like this: math involves struggle because mathematicians struggle with unknown problems. This is the three cuing of math. My very best math teaching effectively eliminated struggle by breaking math down so it felt easy.

Why would anyone believe such a silly idea? Easy. The students are struggling already with math and I find math hard to teach. It has to be something wrong with how the student VIEWS math, not with the teaching. Plus, the gurus keep telling me so and nobody suggests otherwise.

Mathematicians struggle w/ unsolved problems b/c they haven't been solved by anyone. They choose to work on them. Mathematicians have lots of knowledge & techniques that helps them tackle those problems. Don't compare kids who lack knowledge to mathematicians, who are experts.👇

Lots of attention today on NAEP reading scores going down. But the decline may not represent a "reading" problem. aft.org/ae/winter2024-…

🧵 If you’re applauding the abolishment of the Department of Education, you need to do a little research. You have ZERO clue what the DOE actually does. Here’s a reality check on what the Department of Education actually does: (1/14)

I get that scripted lessons “strip teachers of their autonomy”, but what if they proved to be the most effective method of instruction? If teachers truly wanted to improve student learning, surely they’d sacrifice a bit of their autonomy to ensure their students’ success, right?

We are in our Curriculum Awakening Era, and you’d think states would be hustling to understand the curriculum used in each district and share it with the public. You would be wrong. I’m calling to change that ASAP, to support researchers and parents, alike. My latest article

In case you're wondering, THIS IS HOW YOU TEACH MATH! These students are refining their mental math capabilities and will be lightyears ahead of their peers once they hit high school. Being able to quickly calculate basic math functions not only builds skill, it builds

“…if the same funds were invested in four-and five-year-olds, that are spent on interventions for the 2/3 of third graders who have not learned to read proficiently, a lot of anguish, sadness, and later costs could be avoided.” TRUTH from Dr. Jeannine Herron Neuropsychologist

Very pleased that @NYtimes has highlighted the power of knowledge-building ELA and history curricula and the great work of Knowledge Matters Campaign (I'm on their sci adv board). Share link: nytimes.com/2025/05/10/us/…

In NYC, teachers are now writing report cards. One item on these is a Guided Reading Level. I was asked to do a correlation between the words in the books used to assign a GR Level and what was taught in the phonics program. Here is what I found. What does the GR level tell us?
