#curwda just finished lecture prep on filter bubbles & fake news drawing on @philipseargeant and Caroline Tagg work, with screenshot from their participation in the HoC enquiry - and I have just realised that the report is published today! publications.parliament.uk/pa/cm201719/cm… good timing!

Tonight’s BBC Wales Live (10:35pm) will deal with workload, mental health, & marketisation of HE. Diane Anderson, the widow of our colleague Malcolm, will be interviewed, along with Cardiff UCU✊🌱 members. Workload negatively affects us all; for some, it’s a matter of life & death.

Last chance to register for the BAAL: British Association for Applied Linguistics Language and New Media SIG event Nottingham English on May 2nd, featuring papers by Louise Mullany Dr Amanda Potts Korina Giaxoglou @KellyMae36 Caroline Tagg @AgnieszkaLyons Sumin (蘇敏)Zhao Małgorzata Sokół and others! Details here: store.nottingham.ac.uk/conferences-an…

Lovely talk by Reem Madani on networked multilingualism and branding on Saudi Twitter; evidence of parallel bi/multilingualism (with separate twitter accounts on different languages) but lots of mixing too #LNM2019

Fascinated by Sofia Rüdiger presentation on YouTube eating shows and her approach to discursive performance of informality in such intimate entertainment shows! #IPrA2019

tereza spilioti calls for a reconceptualization of transliteration as trans-scripting (= creative processes of respelling) using her online data of engreek, English spelled with Greek characters #IPrA2019

Learning that Chinatowns were originally imposed by the Westerners, rather than created by Chinese migrants, a product of orientalist and racialised discourses- at Jackie Jia Lou & E. Dimitris Kitis talk on media representations of chinatowns #IPrA2019

Discourse of race and ethnicity still prevalent in representations of chinatowns but recontextualised within gentrification discourses and commodification process noted too- very interesting talk by Jackie Jia Lou E. Dimitris Kitis

#TLANG conference in full swing in Stirling and stranded in Cardiff (clashing chronotopes). In spirit with Korina Giaxoglou to talk about chronotopic affect in collective memorialization Caroline Tagg @AgnieszkaLyons panel on the semiotics of time and space and re-framing the past

We are most excited to announce that @EdinUniLEL will be hosting 2020’s BAAL: British Association for Applied Linguistics SIG Language & New Media Symposium.
