Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, the chair of the UCLA Academic Senate and student government officials will offer official greetings at UCLA Chancellor Julio Frenk’s inauguration this morning. The ceremony will start at 10 a.m.

Chief Anthony Redblood Morales of the San Gabriel Band of Mission Indians will also speak at Chancellor Julio Frenk’s Thursday inauguration.

Around 30 pro-Palestine protesters are outside the inauguration. “While we value freedom of expression, we ask that it not disrupt today’s celebration of UCLA and our community,” an announcer said inside Royce Hall, where there is no sign of protesters.

As he walked into the Royce Hall inauguration, UCLA Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs Monroe Gorden Jr checked his phone. UCPD detained pro-Palestine protesters outside the event shortly before the procession started.

Around 9:45 a.m., a group of about 30 pro-Palestine protesters gathered outside Royce Hall chanting “Julio, escucha, estamos en la lucha.”

Dozens of seats remain empty at the Royce Hall inauguration of Chancellor Julio Frenk. Following an entry procession, attendees heard performances by the UCLA African American Music Ensemble.

“We are not only recognizing an extraordinary leader, we are also affirming the values of academic excellence, equity, and public service that define this remarkable institution,” Chair of the UC Board of Regents Janet Reilly said at UCLA Chancellor Julio Frenk’s inauguration.

Around 10:10 a.m., protesters moved away from Royce Hall and began protesting outside Kaplan Hall. About 20 UCPD officers in riot gear remain in Dickson Plaza outside Royce Hall.

Chair of the UC Board of Regents Janet Reilly said public universities are essential to democracy at UCLA Chancellor Julio Frenk’s inauguration. UCPD detained two protesters who fell to the ground outside the Royce Hall ceremony earlier on Thursday.

A group of about 20 UCPD officers in riot gear ran into the group of protesters. Two protesters fell to the ground and were then zip tied by the officers, as demonstrators and onlookers chanted “shame!”

Chair of the UCLA Academic Senate Kathleen Bawn said she was grateful for the 38 “listening exercises” Chancellor Julio Frenk hosted. “Chancellor Frenk, you have brought to UCLA a renewed focus on the academic mission, a focus that resonates deeply with the faculty,” she said.

President of the UCLA Graduate Student Association Noor Nakhaei emphasized the challenges international students face in a speech at Chancellor Julio Frenk’s inauguration. Nakhaei’s speech also called on the chancellor to protect the university in the face of external threats.

“This place is extraordinary, not because of the rankings or the reputation, but because of the people, the ones who stayed, the ones who showed up, the ones who kept it alive,” USAC President Adam Tfayli said at Chancellor Julio Frenk’s Thursday inauguration.

UC President Michael Drake presented UCLA Chancellor Julio Frenk with the medal of office at 11:12 a.m. Thursday. Frenk is UCLA’s seventh chancellor.

UCLA Chancellor Julio Frenk said in his inaugural address that his three biggest priorities are to ensure the university is connective, impactful and exemplary. “Great universities bridge divides,” he said.

“I am proud to say UCLA is not only a university in Los Angeles – it is a university of Los Angeles,” Chancellor Julio Frenk said in his inaugural address.

UCLA Chancellor Julio Frenk announced the new “UCLA for Life initiative to promote teaching innovation at his inauguration Thursday.
