Today would’ve been Pedro Zamora‘s 52nd birthday. The real one. It is the leap day of the leap year. He was a leap year baby. ❤️ One of the very many unique qualities about him. He was a surprise child. The youngest in his family. And he came out first.

And in his life, he truly changed the world. He changed how people think. And did so by just standing up. By raising his voice. By letting people see who he was. Everyone who loved you, Pedro—from your family, who raised you, to your friends, and your chosen family—

We all so wished we could’ve grown old together. I would love for you to have met everyone’s children. You would have been a great uncle to many of them. And we also know that you would’ve been a great dad. we love you. We miss you. Happy birthday.

Pedro Zamora died 30 years ago today. I’ve been thinking about this post for awhile, and I had hoped/assumed it would be a little more “celebratory.” Despite losing him, I was assuming that we were entering a time of greater hope.

At 17, he was diagnosed with HIV. AIDS in the 90’s with nearly no medical solutions to prolong your life, you lived under the cloud of a death sentence. And with that, Pedro, who wasn’t much more than a boy, chose to fight.

He’d wake up every single day, put his boots on, and go fight. Battle to educate young people. To push back on those who wanted to see him and people like him just disappear. To stand up every day and say,” NO."

It feels very familiar to now. It feels like we have now been put under a cloud of despair. So. I want us to remember Pedro Zamora.
