Each year I ask my parliamentary studies students to complete policy briefings on parliamentary reform. I enjoy getting to find out what their pet peeves are and what aspect of parliament caught their attention. Lots of issues identified and interesting recommendations promoted.

If the Opposition are serious about wanting statements made to the House of Commons first rather than the media, then they should use a future Opposition Day Debate to ask MPs to vote for a motion which enshrines the requirement and so make it a resolution of the House. At the

Need more distinction between "urgent" and "topical"/"important". Just because something is topical or important does not mean it needs to be discussed today. Too many UQs clogging up the parliamentary day and reducing legislation to an increasingly small segment at the end.

Excellent turnout of teachers at yesterday’s UK Parliament Education Teacher Network Event, held in conjunction with the Political Studies Association, when I had the opportunity to speak about the role of the House of Lords and its relationship to the Commons. A very engaged audience.

How did Labour spend the 2019 Parliament in opposition and not realise/learn the importance of parliamentary party management?

New Lords Friday sittings, for scrutiny of assisted dying bill. 👇 For more on what we might expect when the bill reaches the Lords, I wrote something here: ‘Assisted dying: what happens now the House of Lords has the bill?’ theconversation.com/assisted-dying…

I was wondering which relationship within the whipping operation wasn't working properly... Seemed unlikely that the problem was the whips though.

Worth noting that if the Govt presses ahead with Committee, Report & 3rd Reading next Wednesday (9 July) then Government amendments to the Bill must be tabled by the rise of the House tomorrow (2 July).

100% this. When will governments learn that parliament matters and in particular that parliamentary party management/relations is vital👇

The humiliation was avoidable. The govt mishandled the policy, failed to build consensus and failed to prepare the ground effectively. Things need to change or Labour MPs will draw the conclusion that rebellions work. Me for The Conversation theconversation.com/the-mistakes-k…
