#OTD On June 22, 2021, Jacob de Grom's ERA+ (adjusted to league average) was 777. A league-average ERA earns a pitcher a mark of 100. Pedro Martinez in 2000 registered the best ever for a season of 100 or more games with 291.

While no photo has yet turned up of the Union Street Park, home of the Wilmington Quicksteps (Union Association, 1884), this snippet may suffice. Located on the SW corner of Front and Union Streets, a rural area on the edge of town. (Front St. was later named Lancaster Ave.)

In an odd way, the Covid Summer of 2020, with its shortened @mlb schedule of 60 games, played a role in the decision to absorb Negro Leagues stats of 1920-1948 into the historical record. If we could count the stats from 2020 (or 1877-1878), why not these? cbsnews.com/news/ken-burns…

When did the New York Yankees not play a home game in one of NYC's boroughs (they began in Manhattan, moved to the Bronx, and called Queens their home for a while)? On July 17, 1904--a Sunday, when ball play was banned in NYC--they played in Newark. sabr.org/bioproj/park/w…

"The dreams are that you're gonna have a great series and win. The nightmares are that you're gonna let the winning run score on a ground ball through your legs. Those things happen, you know. I think a lot of it is just fate. Mistakes are a part of life, but it's how we learn

Brooklyn's Capitoline Grounds was not only home park for the Atlantics in 1872 but also hosted a balloon ascension in 1873. The ballpark had been a skating pond in 1862 and was made into a ballpark three years later. The 1865 ticket is, imho, the game's first to survive.
