It's been a good day for birds of prey! 6 Red Kite, 2 Peregrine Falcon, 2 Sparrowhawk, Hobby, Marsh Harrier, 2 Buzzard (TH library photo-Stu Topps) & Kestrel. This awesome caterpillar was found on the reserve 6 weeks ago, and has now hatched into a stunning Death's-head Hawkmoth, with the distinctive 'skull' shape on the back of the head. It will be released back onto the reserve this evening. Another wonder of nature! Hampshire County Council


A lot of Chiffchaffs have been seen recently (TH library photo-Stu Topps), as they're feeding well in this mild weather & gathering before heading further south. Also today: Firecrest, 15 Bearded Tit, 2 Kingfisher & 2 Grey Wagtail. Grey Plover & Eider offshore Hampshire County Council


The Eider are beginning to gather again, with 18 seen just offshore this morning(TH library photo-Paula Hemingway). We were also treated to another Osprey fly-through, plus: Firecrest, Kingfisher, Goosander, Raven & Marsh Harrier Hampshire County Council Hampshire Ornithological Society Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust


2 Yellow-browed Warblers were ringed on the reserve this morning... a rare catch! (Photo from earlier in the week by Mark Francis). We've had large numbers of Ringed Plover (TH library photo-Stu Topps) & Sanderling gathering on the shoreline recently (TH library photos-Jon Mitchell). A Jack Snipe flew overhead with 4 Common Snipe this morning and landed on the meadow (TH library photo-Stu Topps). 5 Pochard have arrived on the river; the first of the season. 2 White-tailed Eagles flew over this afternoon, then headed towards Southampton. Fantastic to see! The colourful Bullfinch is always good to see on a grey day (TH photo-Rod Smith). Also: a rare sighting of a Lapland Bunting on the shoreline, Bearded Tit, Firecrest, Goosander, Marsh Harrier, Treecreeper, Kingfisher, 126 Sanderling, 57 Ringed Plover & 8 Eider Hampshire County Council


Please note that the reserve and visitor centre will be closed on Saturday 23rd & Sunday 24th November due to high winds and heavy rain associated with Storm Bert. The elusive Dartford Warbler was seen briefly today (TH library photo-Stu Topps). Good to know it's still here, but not always easy to see. Also today: Golden Plover, 2 Marsh Harrier, Firecrest, Water Rail and Ringed Plover & Sanderling on the shore Hampshire County Council Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust


A Siskin on the reserve was a welcome sight today (TH library photo-Russell Tofts) as well as: Peregrine Falcon, Goosander, 2 Marsh Harriers, Tufted Duck, 16 Snipe & Water Rail. Offshore: 2 Velvet Scoter, Gt Northern Diver & 25 Eider Hampshire County Council Hampshire Ornithological Society Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust


We are seeing large numbers of Ringed Plover gathering on the shore near the harbour at the moment; 70 today. These distinctive little waders are often seen near the Sanderling. Also today: 3 Marsh Harriers, Peregrine Falcon, Firecrest & Treecreeper Hampshire County Council Hampshire Ornithological Society
