I’m rejecting the career ladder metaphor in favor of the career river. Here’s why: 1. The ultimate goal of the career ladder is: reach the top. The ultimate goal of the career river is: reach your ocean - a thriving, wide-open ecosystem fed by other rivers to explore. /

Hey, climate journos, try this. Find a regular person, not a climate reporter. Run by them phrases like 'biotic activity' or 'decarbonization' or 'fire deficit.' Do they look confused? Yeah? Well, your audience will be too. Be ruthless about purging jargon

Oregon loves fried foods. Two examples: doughnuts (Portland cooks up so many) and tater tots (created near the Idaho border!). Another is corn dogs, which were invented at the Oregon Coast! Their delicious history is the subject of my latest for OPB: opb.org/article/2022/0…

Eugene, Oregon has now recorded 3 straight days of max daily temps at or above 96°F. The forecast calls for another 3 more. If the forecast holds, we'll match the record for the longest streak of days at or above 96°F of 6 days set in 1981. #orwx

Thar she blows! Oregon’s last coal-fired power plant bit the dust this morning in a controlled demolition. The Portland General Boardman coal plant opened in 1980 and closed twenty years before the end of its design life to reduce emissions.

Coal-generated power in Oregon goes out with a bang! Although as Tom Banse notes, about a quarter of Oregon power is still derived from out-of-state coal that flows through our transmission lines

My prayer for US political journalism: Stop trying to predict election outcomes. Stop treating polling like science. Center the voices of voters. And focus on policy proposals and policy outcomes—not the horserace. #electionday
