The Tolhouse Museum is now closed again until the summer holidays. It will be open 10am-4pm daily Sunday to Friday (closed Saturdays) as below - Wednesday 23 July to Tuesday 2 September Adult £5.30 Concession £5.00 Young Person £4.60 Twilight ticket (1 hour before close) £1.50

11 June 2025 marks the 135th anniversary of the death of Gaoler Solomon Allies He was appointed Tolhouse Museum on 29 July 1864, was the last gaoler & involved in the latter stages of closure of the gaol Solomon died aged 67 on 11 June 1890 & is buried in St Nicholas church yard


This copy of the programme from 18 June 1895 shows that Tolhouse Museum & art gallery were added to & opened officially on this date - today marks the 130th anniversary of this! In 1905 the Carnegie Public Library opened & the great hall became part of the museum #120anniversary



24 June 2025 is the 65th anniversary of Tolhouse Museum reopening after being rebuilt, following damage sustained in WW2 bombing Photo by the late George Plunkett (taken 24/06/1950) shows the building as a shell The other photos show rebuilding work 1959/60 & displays as in 1960

2025 marks 200th anniversary of Tolhouse Museum extensions In 1825 buildings at the rear became the House of Correction Exercise yards & a treadmill were added If the gaoler considered it too easy, a warder known as a Turnscrew would tighten a screw to make the treadmill harder

2025 marks a 150th & 160th anniversary in history of Tolhouse Museum Prison Act of 1865 was the start as it stated prisoners must have their own cell It was decided that Norwich Gaol could take prisoners from Great Yarmouth Tried felons/debtors moved out 150 years ago in 1875

2025 marks 140th anniversary of big changes for Tolhouse Museum when preservation works began after closure in 1882 The first stage of restoration began in 1885 with demolition of the House of Correction & uncovering of original features in east wall & windows #ThrowbackThursday
