The FT makes a stunning observation that the uptake in incapacity benefits doesn’t seem to actually reflect a general rise in ill-health in the population. Rather, individuals responding to incentives. Odd considering our bulletproof assessment system has only a 1% fraud rate.

If you're a pension-age couple with a combined income of just under ÂŁ70,000 a year, the government will give you taxpayers' money to pay your energy bills with. If you're a family earning a fraction of that amount and struggling to keep your children warm this winter, no help

WFP will now be paid at ÂŁ100 to each member of a couple. So rich pensioner couples, where one has say ÂŁ100k and the other ÂŁ30k, will still get ÂŁ100. If both members of couple have ÂŁ36k then they get nothing. Messy.

Should the chancellor really be talking about Southport pier and Kirkcaldy high street? These are not decisions that HM Treasury should be involved in. Absurd over centralisation. (At least rhetorically).

“It pretty much says in here that we expect annual increases in council tax of 5% a year over the coming years in order to fund that spending power within local government.” Paul Johnson on the announcements on local government funding in today’s #SpendingReview.

Just on Times Radio talking about the Green Party wealth tax proposal. The usual populist stuff about magically raising lots of money from Other People. But in reality the Green Party manifesto raised marginal income tax rate to *72%* for a graduate with three kids earning ÂŁ60k.

What a complete waste of time/money. You can just imagine the countless teams meetings and focus groups behind this. This is not management.

New data reveals that 40% of corporation tax due from small businesses isn’t being paid. It’s a hidden crisis that costs the UK £15 billion a year — and HMRC has quietly lost control. Thread.

The idea that artists can't tell stories outside their own culture strikes me as absurd. One of the most powerful things about art is its capacity for cultural exchange. Art forms grow & evolve *because* of this mixing. It's beautiful. Strange that so many see it as a negative.

Frankly embarrassing and intellectually weak how the left sees the supreme theocratic Ayatollah of Iran as an ally

Worth noting the overweight/obesity rate for Y6 children in deprived areas is typically 50%. England average is over 30%. Yet because of poor investment some primary schools don’t have basic sports facilities and often serve pizza and chips for lunch.

The use of “Avoidable” is questionable. And unsurprisingly not followed up with what the opportunity cost would be to address these issues- which would inevitably lead to other “avoidable” issues.

Supposedly one of the best think tanks there is… 🤦 Where to begin on why this is an incredibly naive analysis…

Another ÂŁ30bn on defence. U turn on winter fuel. Rebellion on plans which just slightly slow huge increases in spending on disability benefits. If spending goes only one way then so, inevitably, will tax. Historic increases already this decade. Looks like a lot more to come.
