Tony Wilson And have done it before. UK public employment service was regarded as a world leader in welfare to work - not just on unemployment benefits but also on inactive benefits. Follow the individual with regular & frequent contact. And devise a jobsearch plan with them Patrick Hughes

A new report calls for major reforms to employment support to help address the UK’s ‘participation crisis’, particularly among younger people who haven’t ever worked and older people who have dropped out of the workforce - workingwise.co.uk/major-reforms-… Tony Wilson

1) Great to be part of this Commission. Takeaways from launch - compliance culture eg requiring people to spend 35 hours a week on job seeking or work related activity should end. No evidence for it. Instead a new offer of employment support.

Tony Wilson Welfare to Work used to be the most researched & evaluated part of govt policy (& OECD). Here is the 2002 summary of what works for people on 'inactive benefits' A key element of what works was based on research by Jobcentre Plus on customer service Patrick Hughes

I’ve boiled it down to one theme. LIFE. We have to create systems that enable people to navigate and cope with LIFE. Employment is a vitally important part of that… but it’s not the only factor. Health… skills… housing… relationships… parenting… community… financial

Mixed feelings about leaving IES which I have absolutely loved and has given me the opportunity to do work I've really enjoyed and with some great people. But I am also really looking forward to the new role in DWP - can't wait to get started!
