Why measuring uncertainty is so hard often comes down to the simplest theorems in probability theory. Assume you have 2 random variables X₁ and Xā‚‚ such that E[X₁] = E[Xā‚‚] and Var[X₁] = Var[Xā‚‚]. Then E[X₁ + Xā‚‚] = E[X₁] + E[Xā‚‚] = 2 E[X₁] no matter what.
