1. Q: If "Precolonial African societies were capitalist" why weren't they rich? A: Capitalism is more than just having some markets and trade. 2. Q: Does precolonial African entrepreneurship pose a challenge to McCloskey's burgeois dignity thesis? A: Maybe.

American family economies over time (from @StevenRuggles.bsky.social via Elliot Haspel's newsletter). "Corporate families" are households in which the entire family is engaged in a family enterprise.

A lot of countries basically are caught in a trap from which there is no escape. 1) They have a lot of old people. They need healthcare, pensions, etc. This is *incredibly* expensive. 2) More old people means less tax money, more tax burden on the increasingly few working people

On the plus side, this kind of tech will create digital immortality - ability to train an AI to be an accurate replica of yourself. On the other hand, do you trust this kind of data to be in the cloud where it can be hacked/sold so others can create replicas of yourself?

Dilan Esper I think I've become convinced the combination of assisted dying and state healthcare is very alarming. The medical system should not end up incentivized even softly to speed your passing

A great, comprehensive summary of what we know about why housing has become more expensive. In US: construction productivity *falling* (would be 3x higher if it improved at same rate as manufacturing in past 50 yrs!) plus densification *falling* (stricter zoning rules). 1/2

This figure is striking. It shows the relationship between where people think they are in the income distribution and where they actually are. Observations below the line indicate that people think they are poorer than they really are (and the reverse above the line). What

In my lab, we can show the changes across time and space over U.S. history using a vast corpus of U.S. Newspapers. Jackson and others have used other approaches. American psychology has changed since 1785. Mohammad Atari Max Posch bsky.social nature.com/articles/s4156…

The share of income spent on food, clothing, and housing in the has declined dramatically since 1901 in the United States. It's even lower than in 1973, which many claim is the beginning of economic stagnation.

It's funny that the social stigma of the green message bubbles on the iPhone is also the ultimate sign of American provincialism. Posturing for social status by revealing a lack of international acquaintances or relationships (who'd be way more likely to just use WhatsApp).
