Very excited for the EGU GMPV Division ECS talks tomorrow at 11:00 (CET)!🤓 Join us to discuss 🌋gas emissions monitoring (@volcano_ben), deleterious organic species on ash (Ines Tomasek), and the impacts of climate change on volcanic aerosol forcing (myself). blogs.egu.eu/divisions/gmpv…

Stronger together! Co-emission of #halogens and #sulfur amplifies #climate effect of #volcanic eruptions under current atmospheric conditions! Work led by my talented PhD student Johnny Staunton-Sykes: bit.ly/35i6en1 Cambridge Chemistry Cambridge Volcanology 🌋 Cambridge Geography

#UKCA simulations suggest that halogen emissions amplify the forcing of #volcanic sulfate aerosols. Fantastic work by my officemate Johnny Staunton-Sykes and his first PhD paper! Congrats Johnny 🥳 Prof. Anja Schmidt Alexander Archibald Dr Lauren Marshall James Weber

#volcanic eruptions impact climate, but how does climate change affect volcanic processes? 🌋🌦️🏭 Our new Nature Communications paper shows that climate change could alter the lifecycle and radiative forcing of volcanic sulfate aerosols from tropical eruptions (1/n)

Volcanoes have always helped cool global temperatures, but as #ClimateChange continues to accelerate, the way volcanic gases interact with the atmosphere could change dramatically: bit.ly/3iFb2dM New research from Dr. Thomas J. Aubry Prof. Anja Schmidt #Volcanoes

Nice coverage of our recent Nature Communications study by Paul Voosen isn't here for Science Magazine 👇 🌋 sciencemag.org/news/2021/08/m… Prof. Anja Schmidt Dr Lauren Marshall @theabro

Here is a first estimate of the stratospheric aerosol optical depth (SAOD) evolution following the #HungaTongaHungaHaapai #eruption, using the EVA_H model. I used Prof. Simon Carn 0.4Tg SO2 estimates and a 25km height based on the 20-30km range seen from Andy Prata and others. (1/n)

As expected there will be very little surface #cooling (change of -0.006 K averaged across the globe) due to the #HungaTonga #eruption! Calculated using a simple climate model developed by Chris Smith 🇪🇺 in synergy with data from Dr. Thomas J. Aubry x.com/ThomasJAubry/s…

Don’t miss our Laura Wainman’s talk at Cities on Volcanoes 11 on the Samalas 1257 eruption, today 12pm (S2.13) 🌋 Laura Wainman will speak about their Masters research: bringing together tree rings, stalagmites and medieval chronicles to date the eruption #COV11 Dr Lauren Marshall Prof. Anja Schmidt

Published! New paper by myself, Dr Lauren Marshall Prof. Anja Schmidt Peter Haynes, Rolando Garcia and Thomas Birner. We investigate why the QBO changes in response to a large volcanic eruption.
