Molecular biology research is a game that you can’t win without strict rules 🎲. Here are my 6 rules and reflections as I leave this lab: Rule #1: Everything gets a code! Tubes aren’t the place for descriptions (1/6) 🧵

Extension agent brought in these stunted, frazzled young peanut roots compared with healthy roots. He was thinking herbicide damage, but wanted to double-check for plant-parasitic nematodes. Symptoms look like sting nematode. Will extract nematodes from soil to diagnose.

Nematode counts are not always the best indicator of nematicide efficacy on turf. Focus on root health and not nematode numbers to determine if a treatment works onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/it…

New paper alert! We just published a chromosome-scale genome (57 Mb, 16 chromosomes) of Meloidogyne hapla. A devastating plant pathogen. But this is not just another genome. 🧵 -NO CANONICAL TELOMERES. Instead, a novel 16-mer tandem repeat at chromosome ends. A new mechanism

Excited to share our new publication! W/ Josie Pasche (MS), Roshni Sawlani (UG), & Victor Hugo Buttrós (visiting scholar), we showed how collagen & chitin soil amendments fight plant nematodes by boosting beneficial microbes. Free study: link.springer.com/article/10.118…
