300 years ago today John Smeaton was born in Austhorpe Leeds! He was the UK’s first Civil Engineer who designed the world famous Eddystone Lighthouse in Plymouth, stopped London Bridge from falling down and is name checked in NASA’s history of flight.

He was not interested in fame and his ethos was to create work for the public good whilst always acknowledging the work of other people. He was one of life’s true problem solvers and creative thinkers who was inspired by the world around him. Happy birthday JS! #Smeaton300
