Great thread extrapolating important takeaways from recent Nature Medicine article about aerosolization of non-#COVID coronaviruses --wearing a plain mask (not N95) prevents viral shedding. US needs to eliminate stigma around wearing masks in public to safely de-shelter

Two emerging telltale #COVID19 symptoms that everyone should know about: 1)Eyes hurt [30%] 2)Can't smell (#anosmia) or taste (#ageusia) [>50%]. Add that to the triad of #fever #shortnessofbreath #cough that we know so well. Carlos del Rio's AM screen-take temp & smell coffee

Proud of my guys dverse and Isaac Mizrahi -- start-up founders pivoting to meet hospital needs during #COVID19: SHARKBANZ transitioning manufacturing from shark deterrent tech to PPE & Sunshine Tape converting from Beauty supplies to FDA approved hand sanitizer

1/ I have a theory about what is going on here... One key difference in the updated IHME model is a new assumed value of a key parameter. This is the ratio of hospitalizations to deaths. In the original version, it was assumed there were 11.1 hospitalizations for each death.

Understand it’s anecdotal—but this is in line with my experience at LA Hospitals—#covid patients continuing to present at what feels like a linear rate. Social distancing seems to be holding off that exponential growth felt by docs in NYC cc: David Furfaro

Reading tea leaves: dramatically upsizing the size of a clinical trial suggests that they don’t anticipate a major difference btwn the control arm and the Remdesivir cohort for #COVIDー19

Love what my guys Steven Galanis Arthur Leopold & the #cameo team are doing—leveraging their platform & huge cohort of talent to put on 1st ever couch-ella festival, all proceeds going to #COVID19. We all deserve a Mike Tyson /Mark McGrath Q&A rn

⁦⁦Headline frm NEJM⁩ study of pregnant NYC pts:87% asymptomatic rate. BUT-can extrapolate little frm single sample study of healthy/young pts who are high-touch w healthcare. Big takeaway is how much we’ll understand once we can screen gen population nejm.org/doi/full/10.10…

Pre-published data from Italy shows 43% asymptomatic rate, no diff among age groups or viral load. (Confounding presymptomatic for asymptomatic?) If viral load doesn’t account for severe phenotypic differences, what does? Viral strain? Host factors? medrxiv.org/content/10.110…

Hopkins estimates we need 100k in contact tracers. Andy Slavitt 🇺🇦 proposing a $46B plan for testing &tracing. As someone who’s done contact tracing for UCLA, no specialized degree is needed—just training. Govt should hire from newly unemployed pool to train necessary contact tracers

Our county hospital is officially back in #covid surge protocol while Reagan in Westwood is back to allowing patient visitors—socioeconomic disparities in this health crisis are not just headlines: one illustration of larger systemic issues

One finding that programs should be particularly aware of: over half of residents had concerns about surgical competency upon completion of residency due to #covid19 disruption in training. This was (predictably) more pronounced in high-covid regions

In this cross-sectional study, platelet-rich plasma for erectile dysfunction was offered at high cost, with no standardization, largely by non-physicians & physicians with no training in male sexual dysfunction. @gary_shahinyan James_Weinberger MD, MBA Sriram Eleswarapu, MD, PhD ja.ma/3wOH91r
