We started off chatting about the #ModelMMusicCurriculum and ended up straying very far away from its ideas! The best teachers work hard to remove/minimise the barriers to #music education helping children feel musical, inspired, motivated and know that their music matters.

I've got 5 mins between meetings so haven't started the Ofsted music research review yet, but this quote (attached) from Mark Phillips should set the the cat among the pigeons in some quarters of music education: "Just doing music isn’t enough" in bit.ly/3AS0ZsO

Prof Martin Fautley Stuart Birnie @SFE_MS Birmingham Education Evaluating pupils' work through listening, identifying, & correcting/suggesting/celebrating is what assessment in music is all about. Not jumping through hoops and/or ticking a checklist. The latter takes up too much curriculum time and does not improve musical understanding. 1/2

We probably shouldn’t stop teaching a subject that helps young people feel happy, helps them express themselves, helps them deal with trauma, helps them connect with each other, & helps them learn about the world around them. Yeah, we probably shouldn’t stop teaching them music.

Are you a music teacher with a view on whether children should learn to compose music primarily using the more 'traditional' pencil and paper method? We want to hear from you! Email [email protected] 📧

Agree with @Philcastang #appgmusiced that there is no ‘golden age’ of music Ed. But let’s recognise the advances that have been made since the 70s to open up Mus Ed to more young people and diff musical traditions. These advances now need to be defended as well as built on.

Cambridge International Education IGCSE Music:"Composition 2 may be notated in whatever form of notation is appropriate"; compare with "alternative notation should not be used for any piece which is capable of being notated in staff notation". 🤔🤨 #musiced #wemusicteachers #internationalschools
